Pay Transparency Reporting Deadline Reminder: for Employers with 50 or more Employees in BC
Most of you are now familiar with the British Columbia Pay Transparency Act (the “PTA”), which came into force in May 2023. While your engagement with the PTA so far may have focused on employee protections, e.g., protecting employees from reprisal for discussing their salaries and preventing employers from asking about past salaries in the hiring process, it’s important to remember that the main purpose of the legislation is to help address the gender pay gap in BC.
As part of this, a key component of the PTA is the requirement for certain employers to prepare and publicly post pay transparency reports disclosing their gender-based pay gap data.
The reporting requirements have been introduced in phases:
Provincial government and Crown corporations
Employers with 1,000+ employees in BC
Employers with 300+ employees in BC
The final phase is now underway. All employers with 50 or more employees in BC must post their pay transparency reports by November 1, 2026.
Preparing and Posting Reports
To help employers, the Government has published detailed guidance on how to prepare a report. As part of this, the government has created an online reporting tool, so these reports can be easily prepared online (although using the online reporting tool is not mandatory). This is accompanied by a helpful step by step video on how to use the online reporting tool.
Once completed, reports must be:
Posted on a publicly accessible website, or
If no website is available, displayed prominently in all workplaces and provided upon request
