Louis Claman (he/they) is an employment lawyer at PortaLaw, representing workers across a wide range of non-unionized industries—both provincially and federally regulated—including technology, hospitality, entertainment, marketing, and sales. His clients include management and non-management level employees, executives, and contractors, all united by a common principle: they offer their honest labour in exchange for fair compensation.
Louis supports his clients through every stage of the employment relationship:
The hiring process, including reviewing and negotiating employment agreements, advising on compensation structures, and addressing discrimination concerns in recruitment.
During employment, including navigating workplace accommodations and leave entitlements, advising on discrimination and harassment issues, and enforcing contractual rights through advocacy and dispute resolution.
The end of employment (and post-employment matters), including negotiating severance packages, advising on dismissals and wrongful termination claims, and representing workers in litigation and tribunal proceedings.
Before joining PortaLaw, Louis worked in a variety of contexts, including the BC Employment Standards Branch, a business law firm, and a boutique litigation practice. He approaches his work with compassion and curiosity, meeting clients where they are and offering thoughtful, effective legal guidance. His goal is to be a steady presence for clients navigating what can be a stressful and overwhelming legal system.
Outside of work, Louis enjoys kickboxing, attending live music events, and cooking Mexican and New Mexican cuisine. In the summer, he can often be found camping throughout British Columbia.
